Intrepid Traveler has a new book out this year called America's Best Zoos: a travel guide for fans and families by Allen W. Nyhuis and Jon Wassner. What does this book offer that other typical guidebooks don't? Most guidebooks list the local zoo as a two-line at best blip in the chapter on 'family fun'. America's Best Zoos is an in-depth look at the best zoos in America and nothing else, so if you are zoo-lovers, this will give you the kind of information you crave. The descriptions of the featured exhibits are really what makes this book a hit - that plus the many photographs make this an accessible book for kids interested in animals.
My particular favourite featured exhibit was the Marco Polo Silk Road (pg 46) which is a 'biopark - a facility that combines features from a region's history, culture, and animals to tell a story'. Naturally, this exhibit would feature aspects of 13th century Asian life and animals who would have lived in the area and which Marco Polo would have possibly encountered. America's Best Zoos is rich with inspiring descriptions such as these and will capture the imagination of readers of all ages and backgrounds - definitely a must-have for your next road trip across America.
